Had 3 days out with Matt and each day was awesome. He is not only a fantastic guide, but one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. An absolute pleasure to be in the boat with. Considering I’d never fly fished for snapper before, Matt’s guidance was spot on… the technique is quite different to anything I’d tried before, but with Matt’s advice I was hooking plenty of fish.. and boy do they go….I’m still nursing line burns on the fingers. The technique will also be really useful back home, but I certainly wouldn’t have even thought about it, had I not had Matt’s guidance. Considering some of the days had average weather, he still managed to give me a taste of lots of the fishing on offer at Waiheke, stalking kings and snapper on the flats, kahawai work ups, snapper over shallow reefs, kingies around the navigation markers, etc.. Matt also gave me advice to tweak my casting (bad habits over 30 years) and I was suddenly casting an extra 10 or 15 metres. He is also very safety conscious, which is something I consider extremely important out on the water… by far the best safety briefing I’ve had with any guide in NZ or Australia. The boat, gear, snacks, etc, not to mention his knowledge and personable nature were all first class. I’ve thought about it, but can’t actually fault any aspect of Matt’s operation… other than the fact that I have to jump on a plane to get there! If you flyfish and find yourself in NZ, you’d be doing yourself an injustice not going out with Matt. My rating out of 5 stars…. no less than 10 for sure!
